Anvelink, Czarapata, Wagner, Cota and Ashcraft Take Checkers

141 cars packed the pit area on Victory Sign night at Seymour Super Speedway. Nick Anvelink used a restart to his advantage working under Justin Hirt midway through the contest taking home top honors in the Late Models. Other feature winners were Jason Czarapata (IMCA Modifieds), Shawn Wagner (IMCA Stock Car), Jeremy Cota (IMCA Sport Mod), Jon Ashcraft (Street Stock) and Calvin Stueck (Sport 4’s).

Several early cautions in the Late Models kept the field tight to the back bumper of Justin Hirt. Hirt set the pace with the rest of the field giving chase. The early cautions allowed Nick Anvelink to quickly work to second from inside row 4. By lap 10 Anvelink worked to the inside of Hirt with the pair racing door to door for the next 5 laps. Anvelink wrestled the lead away midway through the contest and powered away from the pack putting several of the 24 car starting field down a lap.

With Anvelink checked out Hirt and Craig Bartz battled for the runner up spot while weaving through lap traffic both tangled with a lap car sending Hirt to the infield and Bartz into the turn 3 wall. This set up a 7 lap dash to the checkers, as the green flew Paul Parker made his presence felt taking over second from Ron Berna but that only lasted for 2 laps as Parker made heavy contact with front stretch wall ending his night. Anvelink went unchallenged the final 5 laps taking home yet another feature win. Berna took a solid second, Jim Schmidt worked all the way from 22nd to place third, Justin Ritchie fourth and Brett Swedberg fifth.

“Racin’ Jason Czarapata carved through the pack and bested a strong field of IMCA Modifieds.

Matt Rechek used his outside pole starting position to open up a sizable lead in the early going. Last weeks winner Eric Arneson battled Chad Bartel and Jerry Wilinski for the runner up spot. As the top 5 broke away from the pack. A caution on lap 9 bunched the field, Benji LaCrosse who had to qualify for the feature through a last chance race, had driven into the top 10 but had a tire go flat ending his night. On the restart Rechek again powered away from the field. Point leader Jason Czarapata worked his way into the top 4 midway through the contest.

Czarapata worked the low line to perfection reeling in Rechek and taking the lead with 8 to go. A caution slowed the field setting up a 2 lap dash to the checkers. Jay Matthias made a late race charge from his 6th row start spot to take second as the white flag flew. Matthias man handled his machine trying to catch Czarapata but it wasn’t enough and Czarapata came home the winner, Matthias second, Rechek had a solid third, Bartel and Arneson rounded out the top 5.

Shawn “Lunch Box” Wagner held off a hard charging J.J. Heinz to take home the victory in the IMCA Stock Cars.

Luck of the draw put Shawn Wagner and Brian Ambrosius on the front row of the IMCA Stock Car main event. The duo began putting on a great show for the packed house exchanging the lead several times over the first 10 laps. Point leader Brandon Czarapata broke into the top 5 midway through the contest and began to close in on the leaders. Wagner secured the lead and worked the low groove holding his competitors at bay. J.J. Heinz raced to Wagner’s back bumper as the duo pulled away. Justin Jacobson and Czarapata went wheel to wheel for 3rd, the pair made contact and Czarapata had to make a save out of turn 4 costing him several positions. Heinz kept consistent pressure on Wagner but had to settle for second place as Wagner took home the win. Czarapata rallied to take third, Ambrosius fourth and Greg Wichman came home fifth.

Point leader Jeremy Cota fought of Eric Mahlik en route to his second feature win of the year in the IMCA Sport Mods.

Jeremy Cota and Josh Long came into the night first and second in points. With it being a draw/redraw format those drivers found themselves starting on the front row of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. When Gracy dropped the green Cota quickly took command. Tracy Wassenberg raced from 6th into the top 3 setting his sights on Cota. A caution on lap 7 bunched the field. Again Cota began to pull away from the field and looked poised to walk away with the win. A caution on lap 16 set up a 4 lap dash to the checkers. Cota worked the low groove and Eric Mahlik joined in the battle for the top spot running the extreme high side. Mahlik pulled along side of Cota with 2 laps remaining but just couldn’t make the pass and Cota picked up his second win of the season and padded his point lead. Mahlik placed second, Wassenberg third, defending track champion Brad Lautenbach fourth and Josh Long fifth.

Jon Ashcraft powered his way to his first feature win of the season in the Street Stocks.

Coming into the night Gary Kasperek had won 4 features in a row in 4 nights of racing. Travis Springsttoh in the old Todd Everard Street Stock took point, leading the first 2 laps of the Street Stock main. A caution on lap 2 would end the night for Jerry Winkler, Joe Schwister and second place points man, Phil Hiles as they sat wrecked in turn one. All 3 cars suffered heavy damage and all 3 drivers had a heated conversation while looking over their wrecked racers.

As the race resumed Jon Ashcraft worked the top groove and took the lead on lap 3. Ashcraft opened up a huge lead but a caution for debris set up a 4 lap dash to the checkers. On the restart point leader Kasperek muscled his way into second and set his sights on Ashcraft. Kasperek just couldn’t find the room to make the pass and Ashcraft picked up his first feature win of the season ending Kasperek’s winning streak. Kasperek’s second place still allowed him to pad his point lead, Springsttoh came home third, Bob Czarapata fourth and Scott Besaw fifth.

Calvin Stueck, who started shotgun on the field chased down point leader Jeff Behm and took the lead with 2 laps remaining winning his third feature in a row.
