Seymour, May 4- On the best night for racing in the area so far this season, N.E.W. DIRT opened their 31st season at the Seymour Speedway Sunday night. A field of 94 cars checked in and a hearty crowd witnessed a fast paced, competitive night of racing.
The Coors Light IMCA Stock Cars opened the feature portion of the program, and despite four failed attempts to complete a lap, settled down for another hard fought race.
Bill Kelsey set the pace for the first six laps hounded by Barry Van Straten, Mike Coel, Kyle Frederick and Phil Hiles. On lap 7, Coel inched into the top spot but John Heinz moved into the runner up spot and took over the lead on lap 9. Two quick cautions for debris and Heinz was in control, but completing lap 11 out of turn four, Heinz machine exploded and spun around in front of the field. Fortunatly, the spin went to the inside and he rolled the car backwards with traffic to avoid a more serious accident.
Frederick inherited the lead with Brandon Czarapata taking second followed by Rod Snellenberger, Coel, Kelsey and Travis Van Straten. Czarapata hooked up on the inside of the track and took the lead one lap later, Snellenberger and Coel made it tough on the leader until a final caution on lap 16 when Coel tagged Snellenberger entering turn one and sent him up to the wall. Snellenberger was put back in second with Coel going to the back. The final 4 laps, Czarapata was able to hold off Frederick, Snellenberger, Kelsey and Van Stratren to collect his first feature win of the season. Frederick edged out the runner up spot with Kelsey inching ahead of Snellenberger at the line for third. Travis Van Straten and Chas Van Ooyen rounded out the top six.
Lucas Lamberies led the opening three circuits of the IMCA Sport Mod main before Andy Kleczka tok the outside line into the lead on lap 4. On lap 7, Jeremy Cota moved into second and after a couple laps, moved behind the leader. Kleczka remaining in the high groove with Cota running low. Over the final 5 laps, Cota kept inching alongside Kleczka. Kleczka was a ½ car length ahead with 2 to go and the pair crossed the line even under the white. Cota was able to get a better jump off turn 2 on the final lap and was able to hold off Klecka to pick up the win. Robbie Thiel, Tracy Wassenberg, Lamberies and J.J. Andersen rounded out the top six.
Ryan Blank led the opening lap of the Turbo Blue Street Stock main before defending champion, Jonny Ashcraft took over and took off from the field. Three laps later, Jerry Winkler took the runner up spot and set out after Ashcraft. By lap 10, Winkler was running with Ashcraft and after a couple of side by side laps, moved into the lead and pulled away over the final laps to collect his first feature win of the season. Ashcraft held off Jeff Jungwirth for second. Patty Winkler slipped by Blank on the final lap to take fourth with Jason Jensen rounding out the top six.
Jamie Schmidt out dueled pole sitter Mike Wedelstadt for the lead on the opening lap of the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature and after a couple laps, settled into a perfect rhythm in the high groove to start to pull away from the field. Wedelstadt held second with Troy Jerovetz and Marcus Yarie making up the top four. The battle for 5th was race long with Eric Mahlik, Jerry Wilinski, Sean Jerovetz and Jason Czarapata . Over the final laps, Brain Mullen made a late race charge and followed the top four to place fifth ahead of Mahlik in the final finish.
The win for Schmidt was his first here since August 8, 2010.
Tyler Hungerford grabbed the lead at the start of the 4 Cylinder main and took off to hide from the pack. Cody Hungerford settled into second with Carl King and Brad Wedde behind. Wedde was able to take over second on lap 11 and the lone caution of the race flew on the next lap to erase Hungerfords huge lead. Over the final 3 laps, Wedde hounded the leader and was able to get alongside on the final lap and pull off the pass and take the win over Tyler Hungerford. Cody Hungerford, Brandon Kaye, Dalton Nelson and Dean DeKeyser rounded out the top six.
Ben Rotter took the trophy for the Spectator Eliminator race.
Weekly Sunday night racing will continue throughout the summer at the Seymour Speedway. Racing starts at 5:30 all season.
