2009 Season Opener

Seymour, May 3 - On a perfect early May day, N.E.W. DIRT opened their 26th season Sunday night at the Seymour Speedway. 128 cars checked in to battle on a smooth, fast track.

Street Stock - Battle for SecondThe Street Stock opened the feature portion of the program with David Hoerning taking the top spot with John Sternard taking chase. The pair pulled away from the rest of the field and after 7 laps, Hoerning was putting distance between Sternard. Hoerning seemed like he was on a Sunday drive while the rest of the field battled behind. Hoerning collected his first feature win of the season with defending champion, Jeremy Wiitala, taking the runner up spot after a tight battle with Matt Drawenek and Sternard. Todd Everard and Joe Schwister round out the top six.

IMCA SportMod - Lead ChangeHeat race winner, Jason Guyette, drew the pole and set out in the lead of the IMCA Sport Mod main. Defending champion, Tim Jorgenson, pulled into the runner up spot on lap 3 and 2 laps later was in front. Several cautions kept the field bunched on the leader but Jorgenson was able to hold off all challenges and drove off with his first feature win of the season. Eric Arneson moved into the runner up spot with 2 laps remaining but did not have enough laps to make a run at the leader.. Brad Lautenbach took a close third over Travis Van Straten. Rod Solem and Josh Long rounded out the top six.

IMCA Stock Car - Battle for the LeadJohn Heinz sat on the pole for the IMCA Stock Car main and took the lead at the start followed by Rick Dix, Chaz Van Ooyen, Kyle Frederick, Rod Snellenberger and Kyle Wanner. On the third lap, Dix lost control in turn 3 which collected Van Ooyen, and defending champion, Snellenberger. Snellenberger was not able to continue and Heinz held the top spot on the restart. Heinz was able to open a lead for the rest of the non stop race while Frederick, Larry Karcz, Jr, Mike Pierrard and Shawn Wagner went at it for second. Jeremy Christians joined the battle for second over the last half of the race. Heinz drove off with his first feature win of the season with Frederick taking the hard fought runner up spot. Karcz, Christians, Wagner and Wanner round out the top six.

Benji LaCrosse - Budweiser IMCA Modified Feature WinnerOpening nights are always luck of the draw for lineups and the Budweiser IMCA Modified division was not immune as defending champion, Benji LaCrosse drew the top spot and after the first couple laps, was able to pull away from the pack. Jason Czarapata Mike Mullen, Jerry Wilinski, Julie Wedelstadt and Brian Mullen were bunched behind for the first half of the race. A pair of cautions at the mid point of the race bunched the field on LaCrosse. For the final run to the finish, LaCrosse was able to stay out front and collect his first feature win of the season with the battle behind also staying close to the finish. Brian Mullen was able to secure second with Jared Siefert, making a run from 17th starting spot to take third. Mike Wedelstadt, Julie Wedelstadt and Brandon Czarapata rounded out the top six.

4 Cylinder - Lead ChangeThe 4 Cylinders closed the night with Josh Novak taking the lead followed by Mitch Pallock, Tony Everard, Matt Frisch, defending champion, Kevin Birr and Tyler Debouche.

The field stayed bunched through out the race with the lead swapping several times between Novak, Everard and Birr. Over the final 5 laps, Birr was able to grab the lead and open a slight lead to collect his first feature win of the year. Everard took the runner up spot with Novak, Jason Cornelius, Pallock and Dean Dekeyser rounding out the top six. In post race inspections, Novak was DQ’d which moved Ralph Liegeois into the top six.

Weekly Sunday night racing will continue throughout the summer at the 1/3 mile banked clay oval at the Seymour Speedway. The season will be highlighted by the Summer Holiday Classic, a three race series on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, which carries over $63,000 in purse plus contingencies. The series will feature all 5 regular season divisions plus the WDLMA Late Models.
